Maybe it will happen soon. Perhaps never. But, we can always dream about the day when the chains that keep us from achieving our most cherished desires will break and release us from our suffering. Imagine liberation. That is the place where the work of contemporary artist Miguel Rodez leads the viewer.

The artist envisions a person who feels trapped by a set of circumstances, which could be political, religious, societal, unbearable working conditions, even a bad marriage, or anything that interferes with liberty. Who among us has never experienced that helpless feeling, for whatever reason?

In a solitary moment of reflection, this unfortunate soul delves into the realm of dreams to find the abstract realization of hope; the moment of rupture; the objective of his desire; the moment when freedom is gained. It is an imagined triumph of hope over oppression.

Because the subject at hand is a person’s dream, the laws of physics, perspective and reality do not necessarily apply.

In his work, Miguel Rodez seeks to capture that dreamer’s moment. Miguel Rodez images are bold and direct. His chains neither look like nor behave as good chains should, and he likes it that way. They become organic objects - seemingly manipulated by the whims of Eros.

Miguel Rodez removes his chains from a contextual setting and places them in a stark environment, where they are suspended in a weightless world. His palate also flies in the face of reality, as he dares to explore both subtle and shocking color combinations.

Despite Miguel Rodez’s minimalist slant, one cannot help but notice the amazing richness of the hues that he employs, the subtle iridescence of his works or the tantalizing textures he utilizes in his artistry. The result is magical.

Much of Miguel Rodez’s work evinces a struggle between positive and negative forces. In this series, he takes a chain - a symbol of oppression - and by breaking it, represents Freedom.

See Miguel Rodez's work for yourself during the Coral Gables Artwalk this Friday, May 6, at 1518 Ponce de Leon Blvd.
