MIAMI (August 22, 2011) - Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami is launching an online Disaster Relief Registry and Mobile Network (www.ccadm.org/joinourteam) that will enable South Florida organizations to respond quickly when disasters strike the Southeastern United States and Caribbean.

After the January 2010 earthquake, Catholic Charities received thousands of inquiries from compassionate people wanting to help. “We recognized the need for a mechanism to communicate quickly and engage volunteers and donors using all available channels of communication,” said Deacon Richard Turcotte, Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities.

Catholic Charities’ Disaster Relief Registry will allow the community to identify, organize, and mobilize resources quickly based on the needs on the ground. After registering online, supporters can manage their profiles via the Catholic Charities website. The Mobile Network will enable supporters to receive text message alerts and make donations using their cell phones even if they are unable to access the Internet.

“Our region is prone to natural disasters so it is a matter of when and how frequently we will need to respond,” said Turcotte. “Even if our local offices are destroyed, we can access our Disaster Relief Registry and Mobile Network to respond quickly and effectively.”

The public is invited to join Catholic Charities’ Disaster Relief Community by visiting www.ccadm.org/joinourteam or by clicking on the “Register as a Disaster Relief Resource” button in the lower right corner of their website. To join the Mobile Network text SPIRIT to 80088.
