I have been creating art and curating exhibits at the Bird Road Art District for nearly four years now. This summer, I will be doing something different. In addition to painting, I will be creating an installation that requires wine corks - lots of corks.
The Cork Out Project is a different kind of crowd funding. Instead of contributing money to fund a project, I would like members of the community to contribute used wine corks that would normally be discarded as waste. Of course, I can simply buy a batch of new corks, but doing so would defeat the purpose of the installation, as this project is meant to celebrates the friendship, camaraderie, love, affection, and community associated with wine. It also serves as a form of recycling, as waste material is upcycled into art. Therefore, I only accepts used wine cork donations given in the spirit of kindness, affection and even pity. Nearly 3,000 are needed for the project. So, I need all the cork love I can get.
The result will be an installation/sculpture created by an artist humbled by pleading for refuse from others and the generosity of the community. It does not matter whether a person donates one cork or many; it is the gesture that counts. It is about a community coming together in the spirit of friendship to help an artist create art. The process is more important than the end result.
The collection is underway and nearly 1,000 corks have been received so far. So, come to the Bird Road Art Walk on May 21, between 7:00 and 10:00 pm. Visit as many galleries as you can, but dont forget to bring at least one used wine cork by Miguel Rodez Art Projects. Thank you in advance for your help.
