Nuevo obispo auxiliar para Miami

I am grateful that Pope Francis has thought of Miami to send us a second auxiliary bishop. And in selecting a suitable priest for bishop, he chose from one of our own. Father, now bishop-elect, Enrique Delgado, studied at our seminaries and earned a doctorate from our Archdiocesan University, St. Thomas University, he served in our parishes and is now pastor of St. Katharine Drexel in Weston where he brought to completion the construction of its new church.

His brothers in our presbyterate describe him as “very kindly, devout, fraternal,” “a good man, well liked, very competent.” I have appreciated his hard work at St. Kathryn’s – work done always “with the heart of a pastor.” And so, I look forward to his working along with Bishop Baldacchino at my side in assisting me in the care of souls of this dynamic, diverse and vibrant local Church, the Archdiocese of Miami.

Today, of course, is October 12th – the traditional Columbus Day – which in many parts of this hemisphere is referred to as El Día de la Raza which celebrates the cultural diversity and richness of Hispanic America. Bishop-elect Delgado is Peruvian by birth, and his election as bishop also reflects the growing presence of Hispanics in the Catholic Church here in the United States – something that here in South Florida has been obvious for a long time.

Bishop-elect Delgado, congratulations – and thank you for saying yes.
