Pirate Radio by Sweet Lizzy Project
------------
“Pirate Radio” addresses our own experiences listening to and playing music and expressing ourselves artistically in an environment that frowned on both outside influences and individualism. Lyrics refer to the home-made antennas that people would create in Cuba back in the 70’s to tune in to foreign radio stations and listen to bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Elvis Presley, when foreign music genres such as Rock and Roll were banned by the communist government. If caught at this activity, these music lovers were socially marginalized because they did not conform to the oppressive expectations of the recently triumphant Cuban Revolution. Frequently, they suffered arbitrary arrests, abuse, and imprisonment which ultimately forced thousands of Cubans to emigrate, legally or illegally, from the country. The song also sets the rebellious and irreverent attitude of this album towards censorship and tyrannous authority. When I sing Pirate Radio I feel free and empowered, as if I am making up for all the years I had to be silent. Today, more than ever, I hope that is the message people take from the song. Turn on your microphones and sing out loud for PROGRESS and BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS! Pressure those in power and fight for yourself. We are unstoppable! Pirate Radio is a message of HOPE.
